What’s Risky Play Good For?

Don’t panic! When we say ‘risky’ we mean balancing, jumping, climbing – but without adult interference.

Risky play encourages children to develop important skills such as problem solving, decision making and risk assessment. The benefits are physical and mental:

 

The body

1)   It helps children build confidence and resilience by overcoming challenges and learning to manage risks on their own.

2)   It manages physical activity and develops coordination, balance, and strength.

3)   It provides opportunities for motor skill growth, agility, and endurance. The further they go safely, the more they’ll learn!

 

The brain

1)   It fosters creativity and imagination as children explore their environment and create new ways to play and interact with their surroundings.

2)   It leads to a greater sense of independence as children navigate and assess their own boundaries. And stick to them!

3)   In turn, it enhances childrens’ social skills as they negotiate rules, learn to communicate effectively with peers, and engage in cooperative play.

 

Parents and caregivers can facilitate risky play in their environments by reducing the use of the words “be careful” and support a child’s physical and mental development.
